Is Diwali 2026 On November 8 Or 9? Dates And The Confusion Explained

when is Diwali 2026

Every few years, a common debate erupts across Indian households and social media about the exact date of Diwali or Deepavali. This year, the confusion in every household is between the dates November 8 and November 9, 2026. This confusion is a result of a very familiar astronomical overlap in the Hindu calendar, as a lunar day spans across two days or Gregorian dates. So when is Diwali 2026? Well, the answer is that Diwali will be celebrated on November 8, 2026.  Let’s understand this confusion.

When is Diwali 2026?

Amavasya Tithi In November

The timing for Kartik Amavasya, or the New Moon, as per the Drik Panchang or Vedic calculations, is from 11:27 AM on November 8, 2026, to 12:31 PM on November 9, 2026. Since Diwali is present for two days on the calendar, people tend to get confused about when they should celebrate Diwali. Should they celebrate it on the day when the Amavasya tithi begins or when it ends?

In Hinduism, you need an Amavasya night to perform Lakshmi Puja. As per the sacred scriptures like Dharmasindhu and Nirnayasindhu, Deep Daan, Chopda Pujan, and Lakshmi Puja must be performed on Karthik Amavasya during Pradosh Kaal (post-sunset) or Nisita Kaal (midnight).

On November 8, Amavasya will be fully active post-sunset and throughout the night. While on Novermber 9, it will end post afternoon. By the time the sun sets on November 9, the Tithi will have transitioned into Karthik Shukla Pratipada.

Hence, performing Lakshmi Puja on Monday evening would mean worshipping the goddess in the Pratipada period instead of Amavasya. Hence, Diwali and Lakshmi Puja will be celebrated on November 8, 2026, Sunday.

Why Is Diwali Celebrated in India?

Diwali, or Deepawali (as it is called in many places in India), is known as the “Festival of Lights”. It is one of the most prominent cultural and religious festivals that is celebrated across India. The festival, at its core, symbolizes the universal triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. Across various regions, there are various narratives and cultural stories that explain the reason behind celebrating Diwali.

The most widely known narrative, which is followed in Western and Northern India, is based on the epic Ramayana. Diwali celebrates the return of Lord Rama to his ancestral kingdom of Ayodhya, with his wife, Goddess Sita, and brother Lakshman. His return holds a lot of importance, as he returns after spending 14 years in exile and defeating the demon king Ravana. As per the legend, the residents of Ayodhya illuminated the entire kingdom with earthen lamps to guide the royal family home on a moonless night. This is where the tradition of lighting lamps began.

In Southern and Western India, the festival is associated with Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakasura. The defeat of Narakasura liberated thousands of captive women and hence restored peace. Hence, this day is celebrated early in the morning with ceremonial oil baths and bursting fireworks.

Apart from these narratives, Diwali is deeply intertwined with the worship of Goddess Lakshmi. She is known as the deity of auspiciousness, prosperity, and wealth in Hinduism. It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi was born from Samudra Manthan on the night of Amavasya.
