One of the most vital East-West connectors in Mumbai, the Sion Railway Over Bridge (ROB), also known as the Sion Bridge, is finally scheduled to reopen. It will be open to vehicular traffic this upcoming weekend, i.e., Saturday, the 17th of October, after remaining closed for more than two years. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had previously set an October 15 target deadline for the Sion bridge. As such, load testing operations concluded successfully last week, and final finishing touches are currently underway. Here are other important details you should know.
Sion Bridge To Reopen This Weekend
According to an article that was recently published by The Indian Express (IE), the final touches that are pending include road markings, beam installations, and traffic signal calibration. Upon receiving a final NOC from the Mumbai Traffic Police, these finishing touches will be carried out.
This reconstruction project was executed at a total cost of approximately INR 60 crore through a collaborative partnership between the BMC and Central Railway. A number of major structural milestones were achieved during the recent months alone. The first of these was the successful launching of heavy steel girders in July 2026.

The construction of the eastern approach ramp, too, only gained momentum after Central Railway handed over the designated land parcel to the BMC on August 25, 2026.

Important Structural Features Of The ROB
This new bridge spans a total length of 61 meters. Previously, the bridge was only 40 meters. It will also have a total of four lanes for smooth vehicular traffic, along with a dedicated pedestrian footpath. Previously, the bridge had only two lanes. The footpath also gives travelers direct access to the Sion Railway station on the Central Line.
The new modern infrastructure has replaced the legacy British-era bridge built way back in 1912. The previous structure was demolished following a 2019 structural safety audit that flagged severe degradation and safety risks. After two years, the bridge will finally open this weekend.
