Mumbai’s historic Irani cafe and restaurant, Kyani & Co., will no longer operate. Yes, you read that right! The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) licence of this oldest surviving Irani cafe in Mumbai. This decision was taken after the team, led by FDA Chief Tukaram Mundhe, inspected the premises and found dead cockroaches, rat droppings, lizards, and live flies in the food preparation and storage areas.

An inspection was carried out at Mumbai’s Kyani & Co. It took place on September 27, 2026, and led to the suspension of its FSSAI license with immediate effect. The inspection was a part of Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) statewide festive season crackdown under its “Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra” policy.
The cafe has been operational for 120 years and was known for preserving its vintage charm and affordable tea with snacks. The inspectors found blood accumulated inside one of the refrigerators. They also found an open sewage manhole in the processing section, and the food was kept on the floor. The raw dough in the kitchen was covered with printed newspaper.

It was reported that the staff were not using personal protective equipment (PPE) and were not maintaining the required hygiene standards. The ready-to-eat food and raw food were not segregated properly at all.
Such serious hygiene and food safety deficiencies pose a huge risk to consumers’ health. Citing this, the FDA, with immediate effect, suspended the cafe’s license. This decision was taken under the provisions of Section 32(3) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
The establishment has also been asked to immediately stop the manufacture, purchase, processing, storage, distribution, and sale of food products. FDA is monitoring the establishment to make sure that the order is being followed.

Mumbai FDA Crackdown
The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the licences or registration certificates of 30 food establishments under the drive. This includes 13 establishments in Mumbai, eight in the Pune division, six in the Konkan division, and about 3 in the Sambhajinagar division. They have also seized 50,601.78 kg of food products worth INR 1.19 crore.
Arun Vilas Farsan in Dharavi, Colaba Sweet Mart, Daffodils Fast Food Inn, Ruchi Veg Restaurant, and EverSub India Pvt. Ltd. are some other establishments in Mumbai whose licenses were suspended immediately.
