Not the first place to come to mind when thinking of travel destinations, Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh is nevertheless significant. The town is steeped in history and was the epicenter of the first War of Independence against the Britishers, and the place has been immortalized in the iconic poem about Rani Lakshmibai by Subhadra Kumari Chauhan. This historical site serves as an entry point into the marvelous architectural treasures of Bundelkhand. A two-day trip to the region gives you ample time to explore the Jhansi Fort in detail and also make an excursion to Orchha in Madhya Pradesh. Here’s how to efficiently plan your trip.
Day 1: Following In The Footsteps Of Rani Lakshmibai
8:30 AM To 11:30 AM: Jhansi Fort (Jhansi Ka Qila)
Located on the Bangra Hill, the historic fort of Jhansi was built by King Bir Singh Deo of Orchha. The fort opens daily from 6 AM to 6 PM, and the entry fee is around INR 25 for Indian nationals and INR 300 for foreign nationals. You can also book the tickets online if you want to avoid standing in a queue.
What To See: Karak Bijli and Bhawani Shankar cannons, the strategic execution tower, Panch Mahal, and the famous Kuduk (Jump Point) where Rani Lakshmibai leaped to safety with her adopted son Damodar Rao on horseback.
12:00 PM To 2:00 PM: Rani Mahal And Government Museum
This site is a must-visit for all history enthusiasts. The residence of the brave warrior queen, Rani Mahal was built in the 18th century. One of the most stunning sights here is the Durbar Hall on the second floor. The wooden panels and the floral motifs add a distinctive charm that’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.
If that isn’t enough to satiate the history geek, there is also a Government Museum here. Situated close to the Jhokan Bagh, it houses rare weapons, terracotta artifacts, and Chandela-era sculptures.
2:30 PM To 4:00 PM: Bundelkhand Culinary Experience
You can stop at a local stall or eatery and enjoy specialities like Bedmi Poori with Aloo Sabzi, Bundeli Kadhi, and Thaggi ke Laddu.
4:30 PM To 6:30 PM: Cenotaph of Raja Gangadhar Rao And Lakshmi Taal
Next, you can visit the legendary Chhatris (cenotaphs) of King Gangadhar Rao and take in the sunset over Lakshmi Taal.
7:00 PM To 8:00 PM: Jhansi Fort Sound And Light Show

Day 2: Exploring The Hidden Kingdom Of Orchha
True, Orchha is an entirely different destination; however, it is located only 18 kilometers from Jhansi. This means that it only takes around 30 to 40 minutes by road to travel from Jhansi to Orchha. What is more, this Madhya Pradesh destination offers beautifully preserved Bundela Architecture from the 16th century. Plus, the Betwa River adds charm to the scenery, making it look quite picturesque.
8:30 AM To 12:30 PM: The Orchha Fort Complex
The sprawling Orchha Fort Complex houses three structures in total. One is the Raja Mahal, the other is the Jahangir Mahal, and the third one is the Rai Praveen Mahal. The Raja Mahal features exquisitely painted murals depicting scenes from the Ramayana. These age-old paintings are definitely worth seeing.
Built by Vir Singh Deo to welcome Emperor Jahangir, this structure is known for its stone lattice-work, grand court, and old-world charm. Similarly charming is the Rai Praveen Mahal, which was built for and dedicated to the famous courtesan and poet, Rai Praveen.
1:00 PM To 2:30 PM: Ram Raja Temple And Local Bundeli Lunch
The Ram Raja Temple is quite literally unlike any other Ram temple. Here, Lord Rama is not worshipped as a god, but instead as a king! The temple is even guarded like a king’s, with the guards holding real guns. Another striking aspect is that the sanctum sanctorum of the temple is inside Rani Mahal.
As per legend, the idol here was initially to be placed in the Chaturbhuj Temple. However, having sworn to the queen that wherever he was set down first would be his permanent resting spot, the Rama idol did not budge when he was placed in the Rani Mahal on account of the Chaturbhuj Temple not being finished.
After witnessing this unique temple, you can head to local eateries or a rooftop restaurant to enjoy authentic MP-style thalis while taking in the view of temple spires jutting out of the Orchha skyline.
3:00 PM To 5:30 PM: The 14 Chhatris (Cenotaphs) And Betwa Riverfront
After your lunch, you can visit the famous 14 Chhatris along the Betwa River. The Chhatris are spire-topped and are dedicated to Bundela Rulers.
Nature enthusiasts and bird-watching aficionados can walk across an enchanting narrow stone bridge at the edge of Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary and watch birds.
6:00 PM: Return to Jhansi
After a day full of history and legacy, you can head back to Jhansi. Of course, no trip is complete without shopping, so you can raid the Sadar Bazaar for mementos and souvenirs.

Author’s Note
I visited Jhansi in February, and I think that is the best time, weather-wise, to visit it. During the October to March window, the weather remains between a pleasant 15°C and 25°C. Do not make the mistake of going in summer or between May and June; you will be boiled alive in the heat.
Summing Up
Jhansi is one of the most historic towns of India. Visit the main fort and harken to the stone walls singing the ancient songs of sacrifice and heroism. The historical complex still reverberates with the tales of a glorious bygone era.
