The full dress rehearsal at Red Fort is set to be held on August 13. The rehearsal is organized ahead of the main Independence Day on August 15, when India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation. Delhi Traffic Police has asked people to check the released traffic advisory and plan their journey accordingly. This is because for daily commuters, these restrictions might result in longer travel time due to diversions. 

What Is The Delhi Traffic Advisory For Independence Day Rehearsal?

The Delhi Traffic Advisory states that people must avoid the restricted areas. The restrictions will particularly affect the following areas:

  • Old Delhi
  • Red Fort
  • Ring Road
  • Chandni Chowk
  • Roads heading to railway stations and Inter-State Bus Terminals (ISBTs)
  • All roads connecting North and Central Delhi

The traffic restrictions have begun way before the morning rehearsal for some categories of vehicles. Goods vehicles are restricted between Nizamuddin Khatta and Wazirabad Bridge from August 12 midnight to 11:00 AM on August 13. Interstate buses will be facing the same restrictions.

Which Roads Are Closed In Delhi Today?

As per the traffic advisory, the roads around the Red Fort will remain closed. The timings for this closure are 4:00 AM to 10:00 AM. 

  • Chandni Chowk Road: Fountain Chowk to Red Fort
  • Netaji Subhash Marg: Delhi Gate to Chatta Rail Chowk
  • S.P. Mukherjee Marg: H.C. Sen Marg to Yamuna Bazar Chowk
  • Lothian Road: GPO Delhi to Chatta Rail Chowk
  • Esplanade Road and its Link Road: Up to Netaji Subhash Marg
  • Nishad Raj Marg: Ring Road to Netaji Subhash Marg
  • Ring Road: Rajghat to Kashmere Gate ISBT

  • Netaji Subhash Marg

The Old Iron Bridge and Geeta Colony Bridge will remain closed towards Shanti Van. Hence, the traffic arrangements will affect movements towards Shanti Van. 

According to the traffic arrangements, normal movements of vehicles are expected to resume after 11:00 AM on August 13 based on security conditions and on-ground traffic conditions. 

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has appealed to Delhi citizens to use public transport services like the metro for a hassle-free commute. This is for both the rehearsal day and the main Independence Day celebrations to avoid congestion and reach their destinations more conveniently.
