66 Chuim review

Certain Mumbai restaurants and cafés draw such long queues that passersby can’t help but stop and wonder what makes them worth the wait. Well, Bandra’s 66 Chuim is one of those. It was not just trending on social media but also had huge queues outside its physical outlet! Well, we at unstumbled with our Dine & Dish series, decided to visit 66 Chuim and know what is the hype all about and if it’s really worth it. As you know, in the Dine and Dish series, we explore various restaurants and provide honest recommendations on whether you should dine there. Here’s our unfiltered and honest review of 66 Chuim.

About 66 Chuim

66 Chuim is a newly launched, low-key micro restaurant launched by the popular delivery kitchen Phat Fillings. It is beautifully nestled in the quiet lanes of Chuim village on the border of Bandra and Khar, tucked a little away from the bustle of city life. It is a cosy eatery with a 20-seater capacity and focuses on small-batch, high-quality comfort food, house-made ferments, and a coffee program.

The Cheese Blanc

The Blanc coffee is a popular specialty coffee drink that typically features an iced Americano or a cold brew as its base. It is then topped with rich and silky cheese foam and served with a hint of nutmeg, which is optional. We tried their Cheese Blanc coffee, and it has got the oomph for the cream cheese. The best part is that it is not too sweet, which can surely make it our summer staple.

Truffle Mushroom Rugout

Truffle Mushroom Rugout is a rich and earthy sauce filling made by sautéing a variety of mushrooms with garlic, shallots, and herbs. It is generally simmered in wine and broth for that extra flavor. The crust used to stuff the filling can actually make or break this dish. We loved the crust because it was flaky, buttery, and not too thick, making it easy to eat. The filling was a tad bit salty, but all in all, it was good.

Not A Banh Mi

Not A Banh Mi is a standalone sandwich served at 66 Chuim. This sandwich is a unique Vietnamese-meets-France creation featuring rich pulled hoisin duck leg and creamy chicken liver parfait filling with fresh spring onion packed in a fresh crust baguette. The bread was simply perfect with a balance of crunchiness and softness. The duck filling felt like the duck was pulled straight out of a pond and served because it was fresh and wet in gravy. We did love it.

Viral Steak Sandwich

Of course, we had to try the Viral Steak Sandwich at 66 Chuim. This steak sandwich went viral on social media, and you could see everyone posting about it! The steak sandwich is a clean and flavor-forward assembly with thinly sliced, tender buffalo steak and bright, vibrant house-made chimichurri sauce. It is served hot in a fresh, crusty, and crispy ciabatta bread. The filling was simply on point, and we liked it. The only thing we did not like was the fact that the bread was too crunchy. Maybe they could have served it in a bread that was similar to the baguette used for Not A Banh Mi.

Streak Frites Churchgate

Streak Frites Churchgate is a classic French bistro staple reimagined with a playful nod to Mumbai’s geography.  The dish has a savory, rich entrecôte sauce coating the bottom of the plate. Then a generous layer of golden and crispy French fries is placed directly over the sauce. It is topped with juicy, thinly sliced buffalo steak, which is cooked to a tender medium-rare. The dish is completed with house-made grain mustard. We absolutely loved the entrecôte sauce; it was simply yum, and we craved more of it. The mustard here is the star of the dish for sure.

Final Thoughts: Dine or Dish

Is this place really worth the hype? We paid nearly INR 5,000 for this meal at 66 Chuim, and to be honest, looking at the portion size, we think it is definitely too expensive. Also, as the place is small and cozy, make sure you come for an early dinner; otherwise, you will have to keep waiting in the long queue. Most of the dishes were really delicious, but also most of them were a tad bit too salty.

Do we recommend it? Not for any particular dish, but you can surely try it.

We absolutely loved their coffee program, which is sure to attract us back to the place.
