Indian trains are a convenient and cost-effective mode of transportation for the most part. However, frequent delays may cause widespread frustrations. However, what many travelers are unaware of is that a late train unlocks hidden legal perks backed by IRCTC catering and refund guidelines, especially in luxury long-distance trains like Shatabdi, Rajdhani, and Duronto. Here are all of the important details that you would need to know about this particular rule.

As per official rules, if your Shatabdi, Rajdhani, or Duronto train is delayed by two hours or more, you are entitled to a free meal on trains by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). These rules strictly apply to ticket holders on India’s premier superfast fleets: Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Duronto Express. Meals can also vary dynamically based on what time of day the two-hour delay window hits. Here’s what may be on the menu:
Hot tea/coffee, biscuits, sugar/sugar-free sachets, and milk creamer.
Four slices of bread (white or brown), butter, a 200 ml fruit juice pack, and tea/coffee.
Wholesome portion of rice served with chole, rajma, or yellow dal, accompanied by pickle sachets.
Seven fresh pooris served with a side of mixed vegetables, salt, pepper, and pickle sachets.

Station Perks For Delays
If a train lags behind its schedule by 3 hours or more, or if Indian Railways enforces a route diversion, passengers are legally allowed to opt out of the journey entirely. E-tickets (Online) can be canceled directly through the IRCTC app or portal via the original payment channel for an automated full refund.

Counter tickets (PRS) must be canceled physically in person at a railway station ticket window to secure an immediate cash refund. There are extra logistical safety nets established by station masters to keep waiting passengers safe and rested.
Regular ticket holders can access air-conditioned and general station waiting rooms completely free of charge to escape platform chaos. IRCTC orders railway platform stalls to stretch operating hours significantly to cater to stranded late-night passengers.
Moreover, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) also deploys extra patrolling personnel to platforms hosting delayed trains to guarantee passenger safety, particularly for solo travelers and families.
