A major policy sweep was announced by Maharashtra Forest Minister Ganesh Naik in the Legislative Assembly. Prompted by a calling attention motion over recent fatal tiger attacks across five districts in the Vidarbha region, the state government has greenlit a massive 42-month roadmap to overhaul human-wildlife cohabitation. With the state’s tiger and leopard populations expanding rapidly, the government plans to build dedicated, enclosed habitats across various regions to prevent carnivores from straying into human settlements.

Every district in Vidarbha is slated to get a dedicated tiger project modeled after the highly successful Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR). The minister estimates that around 450 tigers will eventually be distributed across these managed reserves.

To cater to the booming leopard population, massive leopard safari projects — spanning approximately 5,000 acres each — will be developed across Khandesh, Konkan, Marathwada, and Western Maharashtra.

The flagship leopard conservation project is already underway in the Nashik district, which utilizes structural fencing, internal forest routes, extensive bamboo plantations, and prey-based breeding to create self-sustaining eco-zones.

Radical Sterilization Plans

The Forest Department is actively rolling out artificial intelligence-based alert systems to dynamically monitor predator movements and send real-time warnings to villagers living near forest fringes. Maharashtra authorities are also considering a highly unusual administrative step for population control.

Maharashtra has formally approached the Central Government for permission to launch a pilot leopard sterilization project. If successful, the state may evaluate similar medical interventions for tigers in the future to keep population numbers ecologically stable.

Updated relief packages and safety parameters were introduced during the assembly session. Total Fatality Compensation is now INR 25 Lakh per family. Immediate Ex-Gratia Relief is now INR 10 Lakh that will be disbursed within 24 hours.

A formal proposal to provide permanent jobs to one family member has also been floated as a measure of livelihood support. Boundary wall construction and chain-link fencing at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) will also resume post-monsoon.

To pull off these capital-intensive wilderness projects over the next three-and-a-half years, the Forest Department plans to aggressively mobilize capital outside the state budget through forest conservation bonds, corporate social responsibility (CSR) pools, and institutional green grants.

Summing Up

While conservationists celebrate the nearly fourfold increase in Maharashtra’s apex predators, this multi-pronged approach of AI monitoring, habitat expansion, and stringent boundary cordons represents a critical shift toward protecting vulnerable rural communities from mounting wildlife encounters.
