Travel is set to become easier for all persons with disabilities in Goa. The Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) has now extended its free travel scheme to interstate bus services for all persons with disabilities (PwDs). This concession of free travel was earlier available only on routes within Goa. In effect from June 1, here’s everything you must know about the free interstate bus travel service.

Free Interstate Bus Travel to Persons With Disabilities By KTC Buses

In an interview with The Times of India, KTC chairman Ulhas Tuenkar said the move is expected to benefit PwDs who have to travel outside Goa for various reasons. These reasons include education, medical treatment, as well as personal travel. The best part is that this facility is available to people across all states, not just Goa.

Under this scheme, persons with disabilities must produce a valid government-issued disability card to avail the free travel facility. With this, they can easily travel to destinations outside Goa where KTC buses are operational. The corporation will also provide the service to persons with disabilities holding a valid card issued in other states (non-locals). This is because they are recognised under the central framework governing disability certification.

Tuenkar mentioned that any valid disability card that is issued by another authority must also be respected. He said that the concession will surely be provided to a person travelling in their services from another state holding the required card.

Two Seats Earmarked On Every Interstate KTC Bus

Every KTC bus has two seats reserved for persons with disabilities under the scheme. These seats are for the eligible people holding a valid card. KTC also mentioned that though these seats are designated for the PwDs, the availability will depend on occupancy and booking status.

This expanded concession adds to the existing social welfare measures by KTC. They already offer certain concessions like:

  • Students and senior citizens get 50% fare concession
  • Free travel for cancer patients
  • And now, Persons with disabilities get free interstate travel

Tuenkar added that the extension will improve mobility and accessibility for many such people who depend on public transport to access education, healthcare, and employment opportunities outside of Goa.
