Indian Railways To Launch Upgraded Passenger Reservation System In August 2026

Passenger Reservation System

In an effort to transform train travel and improve passenger services in India, Indian Railways is implementing several innovative measures. Recently, they introduced Aadhaar verification for Tatkal bookings and provided the option for passengers to modify their boarding station up to 30 minutes before departure. Now, Indian Railways is gearing up for a significant upgrade to its railway reservation system, which is the most extensive change in decades. Starting in August, train bookings will begin to transition to a new Passenger Reservation System (PRS), replacing the existing platform that has been operational since 1986.

The Ministry of Railways declared that the shift to the enhanced PRS will start in August. During a recent review meeting in New Delhi, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw instructed officials to ensure a seamless transition for passengers as they move away from the outdated 40-year-old system. While this current system has been updated periodically over the years, it has now been completely rebuilt with advanced technology, significantly boosting capacity. Since the rollout of internet-based ticketing in 2002, Indian Railways has embraced digital advancements, including the RailOne mobile app, which has gained immense popularity, achieving over 35 million downloads nationwide.

Besides this, Indian Railways has initiated a significant move to boost passenger safety by implementing comprehensive fire safety evaluations across railway stations nationwide. This program focuses on evaluating current fire safety measures and pinpointing areas that need enhancement to better safeguard passengers and railway assets.

Indian Railways To Also Conduct Fire Safety Evaluations Across Railway Stations

The Ministry of Railways has stated that these audits will cover all vital safety components, such as station structures, electrical systems, HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) setups, emergency exits, and firefighting resources.

The main aim is to ensure that railway stations are adequately equipped to handle emergencies, particularly fire-related incidents. Additionally, the audits will verify adherence to established fire safety and security regulations. Any issues discovered during these inspections will be swiftly addressed through immediate corrective actions.

Summing Up

Indian Railways is making significant progress in modernizing passenger services and improving safety across its extensive network. The upcoming launch of a new Passenger Reservation System represents a major upgrade, promising faster bookings, increased capacity, and more accurate AI-powered ticket confirmation predictions.
