Zoji-La Tunnel Nears Completion After Final Breakthrough, Boosting Kashmir-Ladakh Connectivity

Zoji-La Tunnel

When it comes to breathtaking road trips in India, the journey connecting Ladakh and Kashmir via the famous Zoji-La pass is often at the top of the list. This route, known for its stunning scenery, is, however, not accessible year-round due to severe weather. However, there’s a major update! The Zoji-La tunnel has reached a key milestone with its final breakthrough, bringing the long-awaited dream of all-weather access between these two magnificent regions closer to completion.

Recently, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari celebrated this momentous occasion by initiating the final charge to mark the breakthrough in the main tunnel at Minimarg in Ladakh. Nitin Gadkari called it a pivotal moment for establishing constant connectivity between Kashmir Valley and Ladakh. Alongside him were Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who acknowledged the importance of this event.

Zoji-La Tunnel Will Be Asia’s Longest Bi-directional Road Tunnel

During his address, Gadkari emphasized that the completed tunnel will enable uninterrupted travel between Srinagar and Leh, thereby improving strategic mobility and strengthening tourism and local economies. Rising to an impressive height of 11,578 feet, Zoji-La Tunnel is set to be the longest bi-directional road tunnel in Asia once finished. The extensive project encompasses the main tunnel, an escape tunnel, three ventilation shafts, and nearly 18 kilometers of access roads.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also commented on the breakthrough, calling it a historical landmark that realizes the long-held aspiration of year-round access between Kashmir and Ladakh. He pointed out the struggles caused by the winter closures of the Zojila route and expressed confidence that this tunnel will bring major improvements in education, healthcare, trade, and tourism.

What Are The Key Things You Must Know About Zoji-La Tunnel

Strategically significant, the Zoji-La tunnel is a crucial infrastructure project that links the 13.15-kilometer main tunnel between Baltal in Kashmir and Minimarg in Drass, located in the Kargil district of Ladakh. Expected to be operational by February 2028, the tunnel will cut travel time significantly, reducing the necessary journey across the Zojila pass from over three hours to approximately 15 minutes. This will avoid the dangerous, snow-covered, and hazardous highway sections.

Beyond civilian convenience, this tunnel aims to facilitate uninterrupted transit for military personnel, essential goods, and tourists, transforming lives across these regions.

Summing Up

The completion of the Zoji-La Tunnel is a significant milestone in India’s infrastructure development, bringing us closer to year-round connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh. Once finished, the tunnel will reduce travel time over the difficult Zojila Pass and provide a safer, quicker, and more consistent way for people, goods, and security forces to move throughout the year.
