On Saturday, June 6, 2026, the Union Minister of Railways of India, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced that West Bengal would get its first bullet train. This ambitious railway route would connect New Delhi directly to Siliguri and would reduce the travel time to just six hours from the current 20+ hours. The route of the New Delhi-Siliguri Bullet Train will link other major transit hubs like Lucknow, Patna, and Varanasi. In order to optimize efficiency, the project will be broken down into two phases. The first phase will link Delhi to Varanasi, reducing the travel time to just three and a half hours.

The second phase of the project will link Varanasi to Siliguri, reducing the travel time to less than three hours. As of now, it takes more than ten hours to travel between Delhi and Varanasi, and more than twelve to travel between Varanasi and Siliguri.

Despite the ease of travel, the project faces several challenges before it becomes a reality. Land acquisition is the first problem, as the bullet train needs large swathes of land, but West Bengal is a land-critical state as it is.
