In May 2026, fuel prices in India have seen a series of hikes being implemented. These hikes are implemented by state-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs). This is to balance or compensate for the high international cruise oil prices from the geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
Here’s how the prices rose in the past two weeks:
May 15: Petrol and diesel prices were increased on May 15 by INR 3 per litre.
May 19: The second hike in petrol and diesel prices was announced on May 19. This hike was approximately 90 paise per litre.
May 23: The third hike of approximately 87-91 paise per litre was implemented on May 23.
May 25: The fourth hike of over INR 2.60 per litre was implemented on May 25.
From May 15 to May 25, the prices of petrol and diesel witnessed a total hike of INR 7 per litre. The prices of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) were also increased on May 26 by INR 2 per kilogram.

Mumbai Recorded The Highest Hike
The city of dreams, Mumbai, recorded the highest hike among metro cities in fuel rates. While petrol is priced at INR 111.21 per litre, the price of diesel is seen at INR 97.83 per litre. Hyderabad remained the metro city with the highest petrol prices, with prices touching 115.73 per litre. The price of diesel in Hyderabad stood at INR 103.82 per litre.
Chennai saw a rise in prices, with the petrol prices standing at INR 107.87 per litre. The prices of diesel here reached INR 99.66 per litre. The petrol prices in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram reached INR 115.49 per litre, and diesel prices cost 104 per litre.

Delhi’s Noida witnessed a hike in petrol prices, with the prices reaching INR 102.38 per litre. The petrol and diesel prices in Kolkata too saw a hike at INR 113.47 and INR 99.82 per litre. Bengaluru too faced a hike with INR 110.89 per litre of petrol and INR 98.80 per litre of diesel.
Mumbai’s CNG price is INR 81 per kg, while in Delhi, the price is INR 77.09 per kg. The CNG prices in the Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh regions are about INR 95 per kg. Hyderabad records one of the highest CNG rates in India, with a price of INR 97 per kg.
