Healthy Food, Healthy Farms, Healthy India
SEHAT is a joint initiative by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The mission is focused on bridging the gap between agriculture and healthcare. It talks about how the farm can turn into the very first line of defense against diseases.
Key pillars of this mission are:
- Using dietary interventions in order to prevent and tackle lifestyle diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and others.
- Helping farmers to diversify into vegetables, fruits, beekeeping, and animal husbandry. This will help rural families to have access to a balanced diet.
- Developing and promoting biofortified and nutrient-dense crop varieties.
- Focusing on the personal and occupational health of farmers.
- Strengthening integrated farming systems.

Central Role Of Diet And Nutrition
The mission looks at a shift from a “reactive” curative model to a “proactive” preventive approach. While launching the mission in New Delhi, Family Welfare Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda mentioned that India is currently facing a dual burden of disease. He meant that the country is facing malnutrition on one hand, and on the other, it has lifestyle diseases on the increase.
He mentioned the importance of diet and nutrition in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and urged people to follow a balanced diet. Nadda believes that most of the solutions for emerging health challenges lie in the agricultural sector. Showing immense confidence in the SEHAT mission, he believes that with coordinated efforts from these sectors, we can achieve a healthier and stronger future.
Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan mentioned that it is necessary to educate people on what to eat and what to avoid. He also said that with the right approach, food can itself act like medicine for many diseases.
