Maharashtra To Get 200 EV Charging Stations; Entire ST Fleet To Turn Electric By 2035

In view of changing the public transport scenario in Maharashtra, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik shared an update on a new development. On Monday, May 11, 2026, Pratap Sarnaik announced that the State Transport Corporation and the Maharashtra government are currently planning to set up about 200 EV charging stations in the state. The aim is to convert the entire ST bus fleet into fully electric buses by 2035. Here’s more about this new update.

Maharashtra To Get 200 EV Charging Stations

A Capable Charging Infrastructure In The Pipeline

A review meeting was held between the Transport Minister of Maharashtra, Pratap Sarnaik, and senior MSRTC (Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation) officials at Mantralaya on Monday. In this meeting, he stated that the state is aiming to develop the EV charging infrastructure in Maharashtra. The goal is to ensure the charging infrastructure can support about 20,000 e-buses.

The idea of setting up a charging station comes under the public-private partnership (PPP) model. It is a part of the roadmap that aims to convert the ST bus fleet into e-buses.

All the charging stations will be set up on the MSRTC land parcels that are available across the state. The private developers will be given designated spaces for the construction and operation of these stations. Under this model, all the developers will get about 1,500 square feet of land on lease. They will be allowed to give charging services to all private electric vehicles. This will be allowed only during the non-operational hours for the ST buses.

Tendering Process To Begin Soon

This lease arrangement will help MSRTC to access the charging facilities at economical rates. It will also help them generate revenue through a lease agreement as well as earn a share in the profits.

Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik believes that this arrangement will soon make MSRTC self-reliant. With self-reliancy achieved, they will be able to completely adopt electric buses in the near future. He also mentioned that the tendering for this project will begin in the upcoming days.

Summing Up

To convert all the ST buses in Maharashtra into electric buses by 2035, the state government and MSRTC are all set to develop 200 charging hubs. These stations will be developed on MSRTC land parcels on lease agreements, which will help in the generation of revenue in turn. Under this model, private operators will also get to serve the non-ST electric vehicles.
