Indigo Flight Disruptions And The Surrounding Chaos

With over 65 per cent share in India’s domestic aviation market, IndiGo had to cancel over 2,000 flights due to a pilot shortage. The situation arose after the Indian airline did not anticipate new regulations that limit pilots’ working hours. This resulted in a crew shortage and ultimately led to the cancellation of several flights.

Passengers were left stranded at major airports in India, particularly in big cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, and Delhi. According to the data sourced from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and published on Reuters, it is estimated that IndiGo cancellations will affect two-thirds of India’s domestic flyers.

Amidst the IndiGo crisis, many airlines hiked air tariff, raising ticket prices to exponential numbers. For example, a one-way ticket from Delhi to Bangalore was priced at a whopping INR 1 lakh! On the other hand, a Bangalore-Mumbai flight ticket was priced at INR 52,000!

To protect passengers from exorbitant price hikes and prevent airlines from exploiting them, the government has stepped in to cap fares. The government announced that airlines could not charge above certain limits, with capped fares ranging from INR 7,500 to INR 18,000. Summing Up

IRCTC is stepping up to help passengers, ensuring that they have reliable and affordable transport options in case they face flight delays. With the IndiGo flight cancellations taking place and a permanent solution yet to be announced, train ticket availability directly within the airport will definitely help passengers.
