Significance of the Tripurari Purnima festival

The Banganga Maha Aarti ceremony is held annually on Tripurari Purnima on the full moon day of the Hindu Kartik month (October-November). It is an auspicious occasion, as according to a popular legend, on this day, Lord Shiva gained victory over three evil demon cities known as Tripurasur.

The Tripurasur were three demon brothers who were invincible because of a boon given to them by Lord Brahma.  Three demon brothers, Tarakaksha, Kamalaksha, and Vidyunmali, were granted three powerful cities made of gold, silver, and iron.

These cities, collectively called Tripura, existed in the sky, earth, and underworld, respectively. The demons could only be killed when the three cities aligned in a single axis by a single arrow. When they began to misuse this boon, Lord Shiva used the Pashupatashtra and destroyed them all, which gained him the title of Tripurari, and hence the day is known as Tripurari purnima.
