Local Cuisine At The Forefront
If you’re visiting Ladakh specially for the Ladakh Festival 2025, make sure to try out the local food here. Ladakhi cuisine is quite different from many cuisines most of us are used to eating – it is more toned down in flavors, uses the freshest, local, and seasonal ingredients, and is generally healthier than your average butter chicken, vada pav, or any other fried, oil-rich dish! Make sure you try local delicacies like chhurpi (dried yak cheese), momo, gyuma (stir-fried liver and vegetables), and thukpa (a rich noodle-based soup), among others.
Explore Historical And Religious Sites
Ladakh Festival 2025 is a great opportunity to explore some of Ladakh’s most significant historical and religious sites. Must-visit monasteries here include the Hemis Monastery, Thiksey Monastery, Diskit Monastery, and Alchi Monastery – some of the most ancient monasteries in the region. Along with these monasteries, you must also visit historic sites like the Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, Stok Palace, and Sankar Gompa.
Events Organized At The Ladakh Festival 2025
Music Concert
The Music Concert is held on all four days of the festival, usually at the Eco Park in Ladakh. The concert promises to be a fun way to enjoy the local music, both traditional and fusion, from artists from not just Ladakh but also from other parts of the country.
Astro Experiences
The Astro Experiences event is held on the first three days of the festival. Ladakh is known as one of the best places on Earth for stargazing and similar astronomy-related activities. Not only that, Ladakh is also home to the Indian Astronomical Observatory, one of the world’s highest sites for astronomical telescopes. This event highlights Ladakh’s potential in the Astro Tourism space and is held at the Shanti Stupa.
Horse Polo Competition
Horse Polo is an important sport in Ladakh, earning it a spot in the list of events included in the Ladakh Festival 2025. This event is held at Leh’s iconic Polo Ground, where talented polo sportsplayers test their ultimate polo skills as they ride galloping horses! Truly a sight to behold!
Traditional Archery
Along with horse polo, archery is another game rooted in the history and heritage of Ladakh. At the Ladakh Festival each year, traditional archery competitions are a major highlight. It is held at the Shenam Gongma Community Hall in Leh usually and is a nail-biting event where skilled archers go head-to-head to win the game.
Mask Dance And Exhibitions
The Cham Masked Dance is a traditional dance having its roots in Tibetan Buddhism. Dancers wear elaborately decorated masks, some of which represent the gods while others represent demons and evil energies. As the drums beat and music fills the air, dancers dance out stories from local lore and legends, ultimately showcasing the victory of good over evil. Along with this dance, there are various handicraft and handloom exhibitions held. And not just that! There are food stalls opened as well during the Ladakh Festival.
How To Reach Leh, Ladakh
By Air
The nearest airport to Leh is the Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, the highest commercial airport in India. Note that flight connectivity between this airport and other major airports in India is limited. Make sure to book your flights in advance and keep a tab on flight delays and cancellations, if any.
By Rail
Jammu Tawi is the nearest railway station to Leh located about 700 km away. From the railway station, you can hire private cabs or self-drive to Leh. However, this journey can be a long and tiring one, taking about 10 to 12 hours.
By Road
Ladakh enjoys a decent connectivity to major cities and towns nearby, thanks to National and State Highways. The Leh-Manali Highway is the most important highway here, connecting Leh to many cities like Manali, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Shimla.
