Maharashtra is all set to introduce the fastest roll-on, roll-off (Ro-Ro) ferry service in South Asia. That’s right! In an effort to enhance tourism and improve coastal transportation, the Maharashtra government is launching a new high-speed ferry route that will connect Mumbai with the scenic regions of Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri in Konkan. Set to launch on September 1, 2025, this ferry service will provide travelers with an alternative to navigating the congested roads and busy train schedules, particularly during the festive season.
The new Ro-Ro ferry service, once operational, will be the quickest in its category and will significantly reduce travel time while improving connections along the coastal areas of the state. Fisheries and Port Development Minister Nitesh Rane shared this exciting update on X on August 26, 2025.
This service is being hailed as the fastest Ro-Ro ferry in South Asia and has successfully secured all 147 required permits from essential regulatory bodies. These include the Union Ministry of Shipping, the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), the Mumbai Port Trust, the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping), and the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS).

Fastest Ro-Ro Ferry To Launch On 1st September With Fares Starting From INR 2500
The ferry, named M2M Princess, will operate at a speed of 25 knots (around 46 km/h), which is nearly twice as fast as the current Ro-Ro ferry service between Mumbai and Alibaug, which travels at a speed of 10 to 15 knots (approximately 22 km/h).
Being the fastest Ro-Ro ferry service, it will be capable of transporting 50 cars, 30 motorcycles, and several minibuses. It will connect Bhaucha Dhakka in Mumbai to jetties in Vijaydurg, Sindhudurg, and Jaigad, Ratnagiri. This service will drastically cut down travel times, allowing passengers to reach Ratnagiri in about 3 hours and Sindhudurg in 5 hours, a significant improvement over the typical 10 to 12 hours by road.
There are also plans to add more stops and jetties at places like Mandwa, Shrivardhan, and other points along the Konkan coastline. The ferry can seat 656 passengers across four categories: 552 in economy, 44 in premium economy, 48 in business class, and 12 in first class.
Fares will start at INR 2,500 and vary by class. For vehicles, bringing a car will cost INR 6,000, a motorcycle will cost INR 1,000, and bicycles will have a different fee, which will be provided later. Stay tuned for more details!
