The City of Joy – Kolkata – is home to the oldest metro system in India, dating back all the way to 1984. Kolkata’s public transport system heavily relies on the Kolkata metro as it ferries millions of commuters daily. Now, the metro system is about to get even more robust with the inauguration of the Yellow Line that will connect Noapara to Jai Hind Bimanbandar area, where Kolkata’s international airport lies. Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi will inaugurate the same on August 22, 2025.

Kolkata Metro Yellow Line: Inauguration, Stations, Benefits, And More

Kolkata Metro Yellow Line Inauguration

On August 22, 2025, Kolkata Metro is set to open its doors to the much-anticipated Yellow Line as well as the expansions on the Orange and Green lines. With these developments, Kolkata will join the likes of Mumbai, Chennai, Lucknow, and Delhi to become a city with metro connectivity directly to the airport.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw invited West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to the ceremony; however, she’s likely expected to skip the inauguration ceremony. However, PM Modi will also grace his presence at the inauguration ceremony.

The Yellow Line Expansion That Will Boost Airport Connectivity

The soon-to-be-inaugurated Yellow Line extension will stretch from Noapara to Jai Hind Bimanbandar. Built at an estimated cost of INR 1866 crore, the 6.7-kilometer-long stretch will have three newly built stations – Dum Dum Cantonment, Jessore, and Jai Hind Bimanbandar.

This Noapara to Jai Hind Bimanbandar stretch will likely reduce the hardships faced by commuters in this area to reach the Kolkata airport. Residents of areas like Tobin Rad, Baranagar, Sinthee, Dum Dum, Nagerbazar, and Kaikhali More are expected to benefit the most from this metro project. The line will make their commute faster, convenient, and more comfortable.

And it will not just ease connectivity to the airport, it will make accessing other parts of Kolkata easier. Noapara is connected to southern Kolkata through an interchange point for the journey through the Blue Line (Noapara to Kavi Subhash).

Orange And Green Line Expansion

Along with the much-anticipated Yellow Line, PM Modi will also inaugurate the Green Line’s Sealdah-Esplanade section. He will also inaugurate the Orange Line’s Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (Ruby Crossing)-Beleghata part.

The Orange Line was operational from New Garia (Kavi Subhash) to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (Ruby Crossing), but now it will be expanded to Beleghata, improving connectivity.

How The Yellow Line Will Benefit Passenger Commute

The Kolkata Metro Yellow Line will provide a direct link to the city’s international airport – the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport situated in Bimanbandar. This airport connectivity via metro will reduce the stress on roads and other transport, like buses and cars, as more people can access the airport through a metro system.

This line will seamlessly connect the airport and will benefit frequent flyers and airport staff, ultimately saving time and money that would otherwise be wasted in endless traffic jams and expensive cabs.

The metro promises a safe, convenient, affordable, and comfortable ride for daily commuters and tourists alike as they connect to the city’s interiors from the airport. Overall, the new line is expected to ease traffic congestion on Kolkata’s roads and improve connectivity in the city. It will also serve as a greener and cleaner alternative, eliminating the need to burn fuel for a drive to the airport or back.

With the metro system in Kolkata expanding more and more with each passing day, the city is enjoying better connectivity in most of its neighborhoods. A robust public transport system like that of Kolkata’s metros will reduce the city’s dependence on private vehicles.

Summing Up

Kolkata Metro’s Yellow Line is set to add another feather to its cap as it streamlines the public transport system in the city. As the oldest metro system in the country, Kolkata has maintained a robust, efficient metro system that is slowly expanding its reach. The Yellow Line, as well as the expansions on the Orange and Green lines, are proof that with the right planning and infrastructure, a city can continue developing a dependable public transport system.
