According to the UCC, the minimum legal age for marriage is set at 21 years for men and 18 years for women. Marriages must be between individuals who meet specific legal requirements. Additionally, after the act’s implementation, it will be mandatory to register marriages within 60 days of the ceremony.
The act applies to all Uttarakhand residents, including those living outside the state, but it does not apply to Scheduled Tribes and certain protected communities.
Furthermore, legal registration of live-in relationships is now required in Uttarakhand, ensuring equal status for all partners involved. Online registration facilities have been established to streamline the process, eliminating the need for individuals to visit government offices.
Moreover, the UCC guarantees equal property rights for all children, regardless of gender or marital status. It also provides women with equal rights in matters of marriage, divorce, and inheritance.
