And to witness a sunrise with slow waves crashing by only adds to the serene experience. Now that you’re interested in catching a sunrise, let’s give you the best place – Ganpatipule Beach.
Situated on the Konkan coastline, Ganpatipule Beach is a pristine tourist favorite in the Ratnagiri district. Be here as early as 5 am to witness the orange hues slowly cover the sky. You can even get a quick workout here, stroll by the water, or simply sit by the shore under the tall coconut trees. This is also one of the cleanest beaches in the region. There’s also a famous temple nearby that you’ll visit soon.
2. Shree Ganpatipule Temple
Walk a little further from the beach and you’ll arrive at this temple. Shree Ganpatipule Temple is a well-known temple and is flocked by devotees throughout the day because of its religious significance. When you walk in and interact with other devotees, you’ll understand the hype around this temple. This temple is 400 years old but what’s even more intriguing is the idol of Lord Ganesha. The idol is believed to be self-created which is why the temple is also called the Ganpati Swayambhu Temple. The idol was discovered 1,600 years ago.
They say it takes some blood and sweat to reach the Lord’s abode and this temple proves exactly that. It’s located at the foot of a tiny hill and to reach the temple you must walk a diameter of 1 km around the hill. Devotees often refer to this practice as a Pradakshina before entering the temple. The temple opens at 5 am but it’s suggested that you visit here after sunrise to avoid chances of being bitten by crabs or stung by scorpions or other such animals.
Once you reach, you’ll see structures of two elephants on either side of the gate. Inside, there’s a large bronze idol of the Mushak or mouse who’s the Vahana or vehicle of Lord Ganesha. If you’ve got any wishes pending, you better whisper them into the ear of the Mushak at the entrance and they’ll be granted, as per local belief, similar to the belief of Nandi in front of Lord Shiva (like father, like son).
Time: 5:00 am to 9:00 pm
3. Waterfront Cafe
Now that you’ve worked out at the beach and offered prayers at the temple, it’s time to have breakfast. Ahead of the Shree Ganpatipule Temple is the West Bay Resort & Spa. Go inside and you’ll find the Waterfront Cafe. They specialize in seafood and Malvani cuisine. Nothing beats having some fresh fruit salad against the backdrop of the ocean. The breakfast buffet here begins at 8:00 am and ends at 10:30 am so make sure you’re in time to devour some healthy goodies. Besides the buffet, their breakfast options include sandwiches, sausages, eggs, and even simple bread and jam if you like a simple breakfast.
