ToggleHistory Of Wenger’s
If there’s one place every person outside of Delhi can identify the city with, it’s undoubtedly the famous Connaught Place, or CP as the locals call it. Famed enough for quick-bite eateries that serve piping hot, spicy dishes, Wenger’s has made its way to the top as the best-selling store in Delhi.
Besides the quality of the desserts, Wenger’s is best known for being Delhi’s oldest bakery. Wait till you see when it was established, and you’ll for sure think it’s perhaps one of the oldest in the country! Going back exactly a century, Wenger’s was first opened in 1924 as a catering outlet for the British who were stationed in Delhi. Back then, it was a small tearoom that served basic sweet biscuits and cookies, basically a staple of the Englishmen.
Two years into business, they made enough money to open their first store at Kashmere Gate as a bakery. Eventually, between the 20s and 30s, Wenger’s moved bases from Kashmere Gate to Connaught Place, where they grew to become CP’s much-loved eatery. And the rest is history.
Over the past 100 years, Wenger’s has established bakeries in Delhi and Shimla, with the former having 3 franchises in Connaught Place and a cafe at Delhi University. Not only that, but Wenger’s is also amongst the first ice cream manufacturers in the country’s capital. Bringing sweet goodies well into the government sector, they also cater to Embassies, the High Court, and the Supreme Court.
In 2011, Wenger’s launched a new outlet called Deli-Weli, and served food Deli-style. This was a great initiative that worked well in their favor because now you can grab some bite-sized snacks on the go, something that a busy Delhi always needs!
About Wenger’s

Let’s get a hard fact out of the way first. You’ll never find this bakery not bustling with crowds! Hard because by now, you know that you should expect a beeline to Wenger’s. Don’t let that bother you, though, because a good, decent crowd is only a testament to the great taste of the food. Unlike eateries that usually experience young crowds, Wenger’s has people visiting from all ages and walks of life because of its ideal location.
Once you enter the bakery, you’ll see that different counters serve various types of sweet and savory dishes for your convenience. Here, you have to first pay, take your token, and then head to the specific counter to collect your order. They serve everything from sandwiches, cakes, pastries, and other baked goods. When you’re here, do try the ham and cheese sandwich, which will fill you up enough to not make you drowsy. For something as little as INR 150, this sandwich is an absolute steal. For something sweet, their Apple Danish is a great choice.
Wenger’s has witnessed Delhi develop and has grown along with it. From serving British troops some Indian chai to treating Indians to some classic English Marzipan, Wenger’s has indeed earned the love of every Delhiite. Don’t forget to visit here on your next trip to Delhi!
