Uttarakhand Imposes Green Tax On Out-of-State Vehicles To Curb Pollution

Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand is one of India’s most stunning regions, known for its charming hill stations such as Dehradun, Mussoorie, and Kanatal. If you’re thinking about visiting Uttarakhand in the near future, there’s some important news for you. While driving to Uttarakhand is certainly a fun experience, the Uttarakhand State Transport Department has announced a new green tax for vehicles from other states starting on December 1, 2025.

This tax was introduced to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Uttarakhand’s establishment and aims to create funds specifically for protecting the delicate Himalayan environment. It is part of a larger effort by the government to encourage responsible tourism, reduce vehicle emissions, and improve cleanliness throughout the state. The revenue generated will also help develop sustainable transportation options in Uttarakhand.

What Are The Charges For Uttarakhand’s Green Tax

The green tax rates in Uttarakhand are determined by the type of vehicle entering the region. For example, small passenger cars incur a fee of INR 80, while small goods vehicles are charged INR 250. Buses face a tax of INR 140, and trucks are taxed between INR 120 and 700, depending on their load capacity. Certain vehicles are exempt from these charges, including those registered in Uttarakhand, electric and CNG-operated vehicles, ambulances, fire brigade vehicles, and two-wheelers.

As reported by The Times of India, the transport department has hired a private firm to facilitate the collection of green tax. This process will utilize Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology, with cameras set up at state border checkpoints to capture the license plates of vehicles entering the state. Currently, there are 16 cameras in place, with an intention to expand to 37. The recorded data automatically transfers to the vendor’s system, which filters out exempt vehicles, and the relevant green tax amount is then deducted from the vehicle owner’s digital wallet.

This system removes the necessity for physical toll booths and significantly enhances the efficiency of tax collection.
