UNESCO Honours Lucknow As Creative City Of Gastronomy, Celebrating Its Timeless Flavours

Lucknow

When discussing biryani, names like Hyderabadi and Ambur often spring to mind. However, Lucknow, famously known as the ‘City of Nawabs,’ offers a rich culinary experience beyond just the famed Lucknowi Biryani. This vibrant city is also celebrated for its mouthwatering kebabs and the exquisite Awadhi cuisine. And now, Lucknow has gained international recognition as a Creative City of Gastronomy by UNESCO, marking its place on the global culinary stage.

This prestigious designation was announced on October 31, commemorated as World Cities Day, and is part of a broader initiative that added 58 new cities to UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network (UCCN). After Hyderabad, which was recognised in 2019, Lucknow becomes the second Indian city to be included in the gastronomy category.

UNESCO highlighted Lucknow’s acclaimed Awadhi flavors and its innovative culinary spirit. The city boasts an array of unique dishes, particularly its famous kebabs and distinctive biryani varieties.

With This Recognition, Lucknow Now Joins A Group Of 408 Cities

With this new accolade, Lucknow joins a group of 408 cities from over 100 countries, acknowledged for their contributions to various creative sectors, including gastronomy, literature, music, and design. Notably, architecture has been introduced as a new creative category this year.

The Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department prepared the nomination, which was submitted to the Ministry of Culture on January 31, 2025. The proposal was subsequently approved by the Government of India, which sent the dossier to UNESCO on March 3, 2025. Following an extensive evaluation period, Lucknow was recognized as one of the 70 Creative Cities of Gastronomy globally. It joined other notable cities such as Hyderabad, Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah (Saudi Arabia), Kelowna (Canada), Quanzhou (China), and Zaragoza (Spain).

If you’re preparing to visit Lucknow, make sure to savor dishes like Galouti and Tunday kebabs, biryani, and the rich, slow-cooked Nihari. For dessert, treat yourself to Makkhan Malai, Shahi Tukda, and the refreshing Kulfi Faluda.
