1. Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib

It was built by Guru Gobind Singh for the defence of the Sikh community. The gurudwara is surrounded by five forts, namely Anandgarh, Holgarh, Lohgarh, Taragarh, and Fatehgarh. It was here in 1699 that Guru Gobind Singh created the ‘Khalsa’ order by baptizing five Sikhs known as ‘Panj Pyaras’.

This gurudwara is built with pristine white marble and has gold domes that shine across the Anandpur Sahib skyline. Inside, there are important historic relics associated with Guru Gobind Singh as well.

2. Gurdwara Dukh Nivaran Sahib

Where: Sirhind – Patiala Rd, Factory Area, Upkar Nagar, Patiala, Punjab 147004

Located in the Patiala district of Punjab, this gurudwara is particularly revered by locals for its healing powers. Legends say that Guru Teg Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru, was asked to visit this village and bless the villagers as they had contracted a long-time sickness. Guru Teg Bahadur visited this village and sat under a banyan tree. He sat by a pond, preaching his philosophies and soon the village is believed to have got rid of their sickness. 

This is the place where the gurudwara stands today . It is also why it got the name ‘Dukh Nivaran’, meaning ‘eradication of sorrows”. At the gurudwara, you can take a dip in the sacred pond and pay your respects.

3. Gurdwara Sri Fatehgarh Sahib

Where: Sirhind – Patiala Rd, Factory Area, Upkar Nagar, Patiala, Punjab 147004

This gurudwara is an understated historic and cultural symbol of Sikhism, standing tall in Fatehgarh near Chandigarh. It is dedicated to the martyrdom of the younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh. Legends say that his sons were martyred in 1704 by Wazir Khan, the Fauzdar of Sirhind in a game of deceit and betrayal by his own cook. They were forced to embrace Islam and subjected to torture, and when they refused to do the former, the Fauzdar ordered guards to brick them alive. Today, the annual Sahihid Jor Mel is organized in the month of December to commemorate the martyrdom of Guru Gobind Singh’s sons. Thousands of pilgrims from all around Punjab visit the gurudwara to pay their respects.

4. Gurdwara Sri Tarn Taran Sahib

This gurudwara has the largest ‘sarovar’ or water reservoir among the main five gurudwaras in Sikhism. Established by Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth Sikh Guru, this gurudwara is a prominent spiritual center for Sikhs. It is located close to Amritsar, so many Sikh devotees visiting Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar also make it to this gurudwara. It is, just like most other gurudwaras, decked in white marble and gold accents. The Tarn Taran Sahib is especially famous for its gathering of pilgrims on the day of the new moon.

5. Takht Sri Damdama Sahib
