Ugadi Festival Significance
The term Ugadi is derived from two Sanskrit words: “Yuga,” which means era or age, and “Adi,” which means the beginning. So basically, Yugadi or Ugadi means the beginning of a new era, age, or year. It also marks the beginning of the spring season.

According to one folk story from the Hindu scriptures, there was a demon, Somakasura, who stole the sacred Vedas from Brahma and hid them deep in the sea. This caused a lot of chaos, which led Lord Vishnu to take the Matsya avatar ( Fish) and restore peace. It is believed that after restoring knowledge in the world by handing over the Vedas to Brahma, Lord Brahma created the universe, and Ugadi celebrates the same.
Ugadi Festival Rituals

Abhyang Snanam: The festivities of this festival begin with early morning Abhyang Snanam. Abhyanga Snanam, or holy oil bath, is taken early morning before the sun rises. Right before taking a bath, people apply oil to their bodies in order to cleanse their bodies and mind of all the impurities. They then take a bath, which represents cleansing the mind and body, and later wear new clothes.
Decorating the House for Puja: The house is cleaned, and a mango leaf toram is tied on the main door. It is believed that tying a mango leaf toran on the main door brings good fortune and positive energy. People also draw rangoli outside their main door. After this, as the sun rises, people perform puja at home with their family.
Panchanga Shravanam: It is one of the most essential Ugadi or Yugadi traditions. People gather at a place where a priest or a scholar recites the predictions for the upcoming year. This ritual is said to bring good luck to the people listening to it and keep the tradition alive.
Traditional Food: The Kannada and Telugu communities prepare Hollige, Bella Bevu or Ugadi Pachhadi on this special day. Hollige is basically a sweet bread or Puranpoli. Bella Bevu or Ugadi Pachhadi is a festive dish that includes six ingredients that offer six different flavors symbolising six emotions.
