Southern Railway Set To Launch First Amrit Bharat Express – All You Need to Know

Amrit Bharat Express

Introduced in December 2023, the Amrit Bharat Express is a fast train service run by Indian Railways. These trains feature upgraded non-air-conditioned three-tier sleeper and unreserved coaches. And now, after nearly two years of anticipation, Southern Railway is all set to launch its first Amrit Bharat Express. This route will connect Erode in Tamil Nadu to Jogbani in Bihar, spanning approximately 3,300 km and stopping at eight key stations, including Salem, Katpadi, Perambur, Vijayawada, Nagpur, Jabalpur, Patna, and Katihar. Additionally, it will have over 50 commercial stops, with notable locations like Itarsi and Barauni along the way.

Southern Railway is set to launch its inaugural Amrit Bharat Express, which will operate weekly. The train service, identified by the numbers 16601/16602, is scheduled to leave Erode at 7 am every Thursday and will return from Jogbani every Sunday at 7:30 am. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate this service on September 15, 2025.

Amrit Bharat Express Will Feature 22 Coaches

In line with the Amrit Bharat design, Southern Railway’s train will feature 22 coaches, comprising eight second-class sitting-cum-luggage coaches, 11 second-class sitting coaches, two brake-cum-luggage coaches, and one staff and tool coach.

Currently, express trains traveling from Tamil Nadu and Kerala to areas like Patna and Danapur in Bihar and Jharkhand are operating at 150-160 per cent capacity year-round. The introduction of the Amrit Bharat Express aims to assist travelers who frequently journey between the southern and northern regions of India. Moreover, with Jogbani in Bihar being just 380 km away from Nepal, this route provides easy road access to the neighboring country.
