When you think of India, the stunning forts of Rajasthan and the breathtaking views of the Himalayas often come to mind. However, the real gems are found in Northeast India. One standout destination in this region is Sikkim, often referred to as the brother state of the Northeast. Sikkim boasts famous spots like Nathu La Pass, Gurudongmar Lake, and even the world’s highest dosa point. And if you’re planning a trip to Sikkim, there’s some news: the state is set to introduce a QR-based permit system, which will greatly benefit travellers. Keep reading for more details!
Sikkim is a highly welcoming destination for tourists, but certain areas require permits even for Indian visitors. These permits are categorized as Restricted Area Permits (RAP) and Protected Area Permits (PAP) for sensitive regions. Previously, travelers had to obtain a physical permit from Sikkim’s police station or through a reliable travel agent. However, the state government is now introducing a digital permit system for high-altitude and border-adjacent regions, which will transform the process for accessing these areas. This new system will utilize QR codes and replace the traditional paper approach, simplifying the issuance of RAP and PAP.

Areas such as Nathu La, Tsomgo Lake, Lachen, Lachung, and Zuluk, located near international borders, will benefit from this digital initiative. Officials believe this change will ease long wait times during busy seasons and improve monitoring of visitor activities in ecologically sensitive areas.
With the shift towards digital permits, travelers can expect a smoother experience, particularly during high tourist seasons, while still preserving the region’s environmental integrity.
