Rath Yatra 2026 Date Puri
One of the most awaited and grand festivals of India, Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026, is all set to commence on July 16, 2026. The preparations for this festival start way earlier, as the rath or chariot has to be constructed and decorated. Many devotees and volunteers take part in this preparation. The Return Car or Bahida Jatra, when the Lord returns to his abode, will be on July 24, 2026.
Rath Yatra Significance
The Rath Yatra is the annual celebration of the sacred journey of Lord Jagannath with his sister Subhadra and brother Balabhadra. The trio leaves their abode, the main Puri temple, to visit the Gundicha temple, which is said to be their aunt. According to the Hindu scriptures, visiting their aunt’s house was Subhadra’s desire, and the siblings visited her on a chariot. They stay and rest at the Gundicha temple for nine days and then return to the main temple.
The yatra also symbolizes Lord Jagannath’s desire to meet his devotees. Millions of devotees gather to pull the chariots: Nandighosa (Jagannath), Taladhwaja (Balabhadra), and Devadalana (Subhadra). It is a chance for devotees to witness the idols outside the temple, which is said to relieve them from the cycle of rebirth.

Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra 2026 Schedule
The Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra 2026 occurs on the Dwitiya Tithi (second day) of Shukla Paksha in the Odia month of Ashadha.
Main Rath Yatra Date: July 16, 2026, (Thursday).
Dwitiya Tithi Timing: Begins at 11:50 AM on July 15, 2026, and ends at 08:52 AM on July 16, 2026.
Return Journey (Bahuda Yatra): July 24, 2026. (Friday)

Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra 2026 Rituals
Akshaya Tritiya
The preparation of the Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026 begins on Akshaya Tritiya. On this day, this year, on April 19, 2026, the construction of the raths begins. There are special rituals performed to sanctify the wood and the craftsmen.
Snana Yatra
Held in June (Jyestha month), the snana yatra is when the deities are bathed with 108 pots of holy water. This ritual takes place inside the Jagannath Temple (main temple). It is believed that after this, the deities fall ill and hence rest for some days.
Anavasara
After the Snana yatra, for the next 15 days, the deities go for rest away from the public eye. The devotees instead pray to the Pattachitra paintings in the temple.
Netrotsav
This ritual marks the opening of the eyes of the deities after days of resting.
Gundicha Yatra or Main Rath Yatra
The three deities leave their abode to visit their aunt at the Gundicha temple in Puri. They are placed on huge chariots and the chariots are pulled by the devotees and volunteers.

Chhera Pahanra
The Gajapati King of Puri sweeps the road for the chariot to pass using a golden broom. He is dressed as a servant to symbolize that everyone is equal in front of the god.
Stay
The deities stay at the Gundicha temple for the next seven days.
Hera Panchami
It is generally on teh 5th day of the stay. On this day it is believed that Goddess Lakshmi visits the Gundicha temple to meet Lord Jagannath.
Sandhya Darshan
The temple opens up for Sandhya darshan that is evening viewing of the deities which is considered to be very auspicious. It is believed to be 10 times more powerful than the darshan of the deities in the main temple.
Bahuda Yatra
It is the return journey of the deities from Gundicha Temple to Jagannath Temple. (July 24, 2026)
Suna Besha
The deities are adorned in beautiful ornaments made of gold, which are called Suna in the Odia language. Devotees flock from across the country to witness the idols adorned in gold.
