Punekars, if you use the metro for your daily commute, we have some incredible news that will make your journey smoother and faster. Pune Metro, which launched its services on March 6, 2022, is gearing up for a significant upgrade in 2025. The plan includes the addition of 15 brand-new trains, with 45 coaches, to enhance comfort and efficiency for daily commuters.
Currently, Pune Metro has a fleet of 34 trains that consist of 102 coaches, serving over 170,000 passengers each day. With the arrival of the new trains, the total fleet will expand to 49 trains and 147 coaches. The new trains will support two newly approved metro routes – one from Swargate to Katraj and the other from PCMC to Nigdi. These corridors received approval from the central government in October 2023 and August 2024, respectively. Funding for these new trains is already part of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for these lines.
What’s More For The Pune Metro
The objective is to decrease the waiting time between trains from the current 7 minutes to 5 minutes, and ultimately to 3 minutes during peak travel times.
Additionally, there is a proposal to upgrade the existing three-coach trains to six coaches based on demand. Hemant Sonawane, the Director of Public Relations and Administration for Pune Metro, said to Hindustan Times that ridership is continuously increasing, aided by feeder services that attract more users. At the moment, 31 out of 34 trains are in operation, with two more set to join the service soon. The new trains are expected to arrive within the next two years.
