TogglePM Modi Inaugurates Mizoram’s First Railway Line
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Mizoram’s first railway line, the Bairabi–Sairang railway line, from Lengpui Airport on Saturday. PM Modi could not reach the programme, which was originally scheduled at Aizawl’s Sipai Lammual, due to bad weather.
The inauguration also included the launch of the state’s maiden Rajdhani Express connecting Aizawl with Delhi, along with two new express trains to Guwahati and Kolkata, significantly enhancing connectivity, travel options, and economic opportunities for the region.
Bairabi-Sairang Railway Line
The Bairabi–Sairang railway line is a 51.38 km broad-gauge line. It is built at a cost of over INR 8,070 crore. This line connects Bairabi on the Assam-Mizoram border to Sairang, a town which is about 12-20 km from Aizawl.
This construction was extremely challenging due to difficult hilly terrain, comprising 45 tunnels, 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, and multiple road overbridges and underpasses. One of its notable features is Bridge No. 144 near Sairang. It stands 114 meters tall, taller than Delhi’s Qutub Minar, and is the tallest pier railway bridge in India.
The new railway line includes the following main stations: Bairabi, Kawnpui, Hortoki, Mualkhang, and Sairang. This route effectively links Mizoram’s capital region with the Indian National Railway network via Assam. This clearly opens up its access to the rest of the country.
