In India, while many cities boast metro and train systems, efficient water metro options remain limited. Kochi in Kerala is home to the country’s first water metro system, and now Patna, the capital of Bihar, is preparing to enhance its public transport with a new Water Metro initiative. Announced by the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, this project aims to capitalize on India’s inland waterways, promoting sustainable transport, economic growth, and tourism.
The Water Metro in Patna will leverage the Ganga River to create a cleaner and eco-friendly commuting option. This service is designed to connect both sides of the river, helping to reduce road congestion and provide a convenient travel option for thousands of daily users.
Patna Water Metro Will Boost Tourism, Create Job Opportunities And Promote Ecotourism
Key aspects of the project include the construction of 16 new jetties and two modern terminals, alongside the establishment of a dedicated vessel hub for ferry management and maintenance. Additionally, the National Inland Waterways Institute (NIWI) in Patna will be upgraded to become a center of excellence, supporting not only this current project but also future innovations in water transport. These developments are set to elevate Patna as a key center for inland water transport in eastern India.
Beyond easing daily travel, the Water Metro project is likely to boost tourism along the scenic Ganga riverfront. It is expected to create jobs in various sectors such as ferry operations and terminal management, and promote ecotourism by linking the service to Patna’s rich cultural heritage. According to Minister Sonowal, the Water Metro will provide a modern, clean, and efficient urban transport solution. As the project unfolds, it promises not just to modernize transport in the area but also to foster new opportunities for growth and sustainability in Bihar.
Currently, only Kochi in Kerala has a working Water Metro in India. However, Mumbai is set to change its public transport system with a similar Water Metro project. This exciting initiative plans to link important areas such as Vasai, Thane, and Borivali using battery-powered ferries, providing an eco-friendly option to help ease congestion on the city’s busy roads and railways.
