No More Electronic Travel Authorisation: Sri Lanka Opens Doors Wider For Indian Travelers

Sri Lanka

With round-trip flights from INR 18,000 and a no-hassle visa process, Sri Lanka offers breathtaking scenery and rich culture, making it a top choice for Indian travellers. And now, in a strategic move to boost its tourism sector, Sri Lanka has announced the removal of the mandatory Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) requirement for travellers. This decision is a direct response to the rising number of visitors, particularly from India. The aim is to streamline entry procedures, making it more convenient for tourists and encouraging more visits during the busy travel season.

With India being the largest source of incoming tourists for three consecutive months, Sri Lankan authorities believe that lifting the ETA requirement will significantly boost the country’s appeal as a quick, easy, and inviting destination for travelers from around the world.

What To Know About Sri Lanka’s Electronic Travel Authorisation

The country’s Department of Immigration and Emigration confirmed that visitors no longer need to obtain ETA approval before their arrival. The authorities reversed their decision after a rule was set to take effect on October 15. By making this change, Sri Lanka aims to simplify entry procedures and attract more tourists during its busy travel season.

Sri Lanka’s ambassador to India, Mahishini Colonne, officially announced the suspension of the mandatory ETA. The department stated that travelers can now apply for visas using previous methods, as all visa and ETA services will function as they did before October 15, until new policies are introduced.

For Indian travelers, this change streamlines the travel planning process. Indians make up a significant portion of visitors to Sri Lanka, accounting for over 31% of recent tourist numbers, with around 416,000 Indian tourists visiting in 2024.

What Should You Do Now?

Indian travelers should continue using existing visa and ETA services, check cancellation policies for flights and accommodation, and stay updated through official channels for any future announcements and revised policies.
