New Airport In Navi Mumbai: Cost And Inauguration Plan

The Navi Mumbai Airport, also called DB Patil International Airport, is being developed by the Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd (NMIAL).

This is a 74:26 joint venture between Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL) and City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO).

The greenfield airport is being constructed at a whopping cost of INR 16,700 crore and is aiming to reduce congestion at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai.

Built over a land covering about 1,160 hectares, the airport will be a shining example of world-class aviation infrastructure in the bustling metropolitan area of Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the project in 2018. Since then, the construction of this new Navi Mumbai Airport has been in full swing. In 2025, the airport will finally be operational for the general public.

Navi Mumbai International Airport

The airport was initially planned to be inaugurated in April 2025, however, the plan has been postponed to June 2025.

As per the initial plan, domestic operations were expected to begin in the month of May, while international operations were expected to begin by the end of July.

If things go as planned, the larger Mumbai Metropolitan Area (MMA) will be home to two international airports!

The Navi Mumbai International Airport: Key Highlights

This new airport in Navi Mumbai will consist of two runways and four terminals. It will be built over 1,160 hectares of land and will have parallel runways and cargo terminals.

Besides that, the Navi Mumbai airport will also have an apron area, taxiways, an aircraft maintenance site, long-term aircraft parking, and many other facilities.

The airport, in its first phase, will also have a low-cost carrier terminal. This terminal will have a capacity of two million passengers in a year.

The airport design will be heavily influenced by lotus and will feature food courts, lounges, and other facilities for the convenience of travelers.

Recently, a joint team conducted a thorough inspection of the airport, consisting of prominent officials such as Vipin Kumar, Chairman of the Airport Authority of India (AAI); Prakash Nikam, Regional Director of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS); and representatives from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), AAHL and CIDCO. Gautam Adani also recently visited the site to review the progress so far.

He then confirmed that the airport will be operational in June 2025.

Why A New Airport In Mumbai?

You must be wondering why MMA is building one more airport when it already has a fully functional airport. The CSMIA is the second busiest airport in the country, only behind Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.

The CSMIA handles about 40 to 50 million passengers annually. While the airport has been running efficiently since its inception, it is challenged to tackle congestion issues. With the new airport building up in Navi Mumbai, congestion at the CSMIA will be greatly reduced.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport will greatly increase connectivity and make air travel more convenient and efficient for people in the MMA.

Plus, it will connect the cities of Panvel, Kamothe, Ulwe, Kharghar, and Taloja. Naturally, housing demand and prices will also soar up in these localities owing to an international airport in the vicinity.

Summing Up

The DB Patil International Airport Navi Mumbai will greatly ease the functioning of the over-burdened CSMIA in Mumbai. The airport will also boost connectivity between Mumbai city and Navi Mumbai. Also, it will make international air travel convenient and accessible to more and more people.
