Mumbai is renowned for its vibrant streets, impressive skyline, and tempting street food, but it also features a variety of parks and natural recreational areas. To enhance its array of attractions, the city is set to introduce a new mangrove park. Located in Gorai, a village in the Dharavi Bhet area, the Gorai Mangrove Park will span eight hectares. It is anticipated to open on May 1. This area has been designated as a reserve forest. It aims to serve as an important ecological and educational resource in Mumbai.
Once open, the Gorai Mangrove Park will allow visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of mangroves and enjoy their peaceful surroundings. This park aims to connect people with nature while raising awareness about conservation. According to officials, the park’s construction should wrap up by the end of April, with plans for an inauguration on May 1 or, at the latest, by June 5.
Gorai Mangrove Park Also Offers A Wooden Boardwalk
A key feature of the park is the Nature Conservation and Interpretation Centre, which spans 1,517 square meters and is located next to a dumping ground. This center will serve as an educational space, highlighting the significance of mangroves and their ecosystems. Remarkably, the center was built without cutting down any mangrove trees.
Besides this, the Gorai Mangrove Park will also feature a 700-meter-long wooden boardwalk, known as the Mangrove Trail. It is constructed without harming the existing mangroves. A watch tower will provide stunning views of the mangrove ecosystem. The park includes environmentally friendly features, such as rooftop solar panels with a capacity of 120 kilowatts. These solar panels will supply over 80% of the energy needed for the Nature Conservation and Interpretation Centre.
This project, managed by the Maharashtra Forest Department’s Mangrove Cell, started in 2021 with a budget of approximately Rs 23.63 crore. Stay tuned for more updates!
