Mumbai’s Long-Awaited Water Taxi Service To Begin Operations On 22 September

Water Taxi

Due to heavy traffic and roadblocks caused by metro construction in Mumbai, getting from one location to another has become quite challenging. Sometimes, trips can take up to three hours. However, we have some good news for you! The highly anticipated water taxi service is all set to launch in Mumbai soon! Starting September 22, the Maharashtra government will introduce this service to shorten travel times between the Gateway of India and Navi Mumbai.

The water taxi service, which was scheduled to launch in March 2025, will finally launch in September 2025 and provide a quicker, cleaner, and more comfortable way to travel between the Gateway of India/Mumbai Ferry Wharf and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA). Currently, the only option is wooden boats, which charge Rs 100 per person and take over an hour to cross the distance. However, after the launch, the new electric boats will reduce the journey to just 40 minutes.

As per the reports in Free Press Journal, Sohel Kazani, the owner of Bharat Freight Group (BFG), which will handle the operation, shared that two water taxis will be launched in the initial phase, with plans for four hydrogen-powered boats to be added once the necessary equipment is set up.

The boats will feature a sleek European design, made from fiber and glass, ensuring energy efficiency, stability, and comfort. Additionally, BFG aims to extend the service beyond JNPA, introducing more routes that connect South Mumbai to locations like Elephanta Caves, Belapur, Alibaug, and various harbor tourism destinations.

This new water taxi service is set to transform daily travel by offering an eco-friendly option compared to traditional road transport. By utilizing Mumbai’s vast sea routes, it plans to alleviate congestion and pollution while providing a fast and efficient way to commute between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

Regarding bookings, schedules, ticket prices for the water taxi, and other important details, all this information will be announced closer to the launch date. Stay tuned for more updates!
