In a significant initiative against traffic violations, the Mumbai Traffic Police launched an extensive operation targeting autorickshaw and taxi drivers who engage in misconduct and harass passengers. The campaign, which took place from April 18 to May 2, 2025, spanned several key locations throughout the city, including railway stations, bus terminals, markets, and other public spaces. As a result of this enforcement effort, a staggering total of 48,417 electronic challans were issued.
Data from the traffic department revealed that the direct violations included 28,814 instances of fare refusals, 6,268 cases of overloading passengers, and 1,164 drivers punished for not adhering to the required uniform regulations. Additionally, there were 12,171 other violations, which included failing to carry essential documents, lacking badges, and operating without valid permits. The operation successfully collected fines totaling INR 40,25,356 from these violations.
Mumbai Traffic Police Has Announced That Such Initiatives Will Be Organised In The Future Too
Officials stated that the objective of this operation is twofold: to enforce existing laws and enhance the quality of service provided to commuters.
The traffic police encouraged citizens to report any further violations via their online platform or helpline, ensuring prompt responses to complaints. They also confirmed that similar enforcement initiatives will be organized in the future to promote a safer and more efficient commuting environment.
This two-week crackdown aimed to address widespread public grievances regarding cab and autorickshaw drivers’ reluctance to transport passengers. The operation not only targeted fare refusals but also enforced strict penalties for other common offenses, advocating for greater accountability among transportation service providers and improved compliance with traffic regulations.
