Red Alert In Mumbai: 100+ mm Rain

The city of Mumbai has been waking up to torrential rains in the entirety of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region in the third week of August 2025. Not just South Mumbai, but many parts of suburban Mumbai, including Vasai-Virar, Thane, Bhiwandi, and Navi Mumbai too are experiencing massive rainfall.

The IMD has issued a ‘red alert’ for the city, advising residents to stay indoors and avoid non-essential travel. Key neighborhoods in Mumbai like Andheri, Malad, Dadar, and Wadala are experiencing waterlogging in many low-lying areas.

In the background of such heavy downpour, the BMC announced a holiday for schools and universities on Monday, August 18 as well as Tuesday, August 19, 2025.

Mumbai local trains, just like each year, are experiencing major technical issues and delays, causing trains to run at a delay of anywhere between 30 minutes and several hours.

Airlines Issues Travel Advisories

Air traffic took a major blow, thanks to Mumbai’s torrential rains. With air traffic compromised, several airlines took to their social media to issue travel advisories to travelers. The Mumbai Airport authority issued a formal statement advising travelers to “check their flight status with their respective airlines” and arrive at the airport a little earlier than usual to avoid any risk or last-minute delay.

IndiGo, one of India’s leading airlines, also released its passenger alert on X (formerly Twitter). The travel advisory read: “The rain continues to make its presence felt across Mumbai, and road travel has been affected in parts. Traffic is moving slowly on some routes to the airport due to persistent showers and pooling water.” It advised travelers to keep an eye out for flight updates via their app and website. IndiGo also assured that their airport teams are on standby and ready to help travelers reach their destination safely.

Akasa Air, another major airline, highlighted the heavy rainfall not just in Mumbai but also Goa, Pune, and Bengaluru. It issued a travel advisory requesting travelers to plan for additional travel time to reach the airport. The travel advisory took note of the slow moving traffic and congestion on the roads in these major cities that can further delay travel time for those reaching the airport.

IMD Issues Red Alert For Mumbai

IMD issued a ‘red alert’ for Mumbai and its suburbs, warning of heavy rain in all parts of the city. Weather reports suggest that parts of Thane, Kalyan, and interior regions of MMR will receive very heavy rains at a speed of 60 mm/hour.

Major neighborhoods in Mumbai, like Dadar, Bandra, Worli, Chembur, Andheri, Ghatkopar, as well as Colaba will likely face waterlogging in many of their low-lying areas.

The rain in the second and third week of August 2025 has been so torrential that the city recorded a whopping 185 mm of rain overnight on August 18 alone!

Amid the continuous downpour, BMC has urged residents to stay indoors and avoid non-essential travel. It advised residents to stay vigilant and take necessary safety measures, along with urging them to contact the BMC Main Control Room Helpline at 1916.

Summing Up

Mumbai is experiencing one of its wettest months of 2025, recording more than 100 mm of rainfall in just a single day. This heavy downpour has significantly impacted local commute as well as international travel for millions of Mumbaikars. Waterlogging and heavy downpour has also caused many roads and areas to go partially underwater, causing damage to life and property. We advise you to stay indoors, take necessary precautions, and keep a tab on local weather updates.
