Maharashtra To Re-Launch Seaplane Services Connecting Mumbai, Pune To Scenic Hotspots

Seaplane Services

When you think of seaplanes, the Maldives often comes to mind. However, guess what? You will soon have the chance to enjoy a seaplane ride without leaving India! And it’s not just in places like the Andaman Islands or Lakshadweep; you’ll be able to experience this right in Maharashtra. The Maharashtra government is preparing to launch its exciting seaplane tourism project, with the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) issuing new tenders to attract both domestic and international operators. This initiative aims to enhance tourism, improve regional connectivity, and offer better access to remote areas across the state.

If you’re excited about this, you’ll be glad to hear that the MTDC has identified eight main routes for possible seaplane services and is looking for bidders to operate them. This new initiative comes with a more thoughtful financial plan compared to previous efforts. Operators will need to fully fund the project, but MTDC has proposed either reimbursing their expenses over five years or offering a revenue guarantee for three years to help make it financially sustainable.

The Seaplane Services Will Connect Mumbai And Pune To Locations Like Ganpatipule, Alibaug And More

Maharashtra is set to revive its seaplane tourism initiative after a decade, aiming to enhance regional connectivity and draw more visitors. According to a report from the Indian Express, the MTDC plans to reintroduce seaplane services linking Mumbai and Pune to picturesque locations such as Ganpatipule, Koyna Dam, Ujani Dam, and Mandwa. Selected operators will conduct feasibility studies for the routes, utilizing aircraft between 9 and 19 seats, which must be no more than 12 years old and capable of landing on both land and water.

The project’s objectives include reducing travel times to these scenic spots, providing tourists with a unique flying experience, and showcasing the state’s rich cultural and natural heritage. This follows a previous service launched in 2014 that was discontinued due to regulatory and legal challenges. The MTDC is actively seeking bids from experienced aviation companies to manage the new seaplane operations.
