The Yashwantrao Chavan Expressway, commonly known as the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, is an important 94.5-kilometer highway in Maharashtra. In relation to the ambitious expansion project along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, officials indicate that the addition of four new lanes will enhance the expressway to a total of ten lanes upon completion by the year 2030, pending government approvals and the necessary tendering processes.
Mumbai-Pune Expressway Expansion Project To Be Built At INR 14,260 Crore
The projected budget for this expansion stands at INR 14,260 crore, with the state being responsible for approximately 40% of the total funding. The companies chosen through a competitive bidding process will cover the remaining expenses.
Opened on April 1, 2002, the inter-city expressway features six lanes- three in each direction and handles between 80,000 to 100,000 vehicles daily. Traffic spikes on weekends and public holidays often lead to lengthy traffic jams. To alleviate congestion, authorities tore down the 190-year-old Amrutanjan Bridge in 2020, yet motorists still face significant delays, particularly where the expressway intersects with the Old Mumbai–Pune Highway (National Highway 4).
