When you think of New York, images of the majestic Empire State Building, the vibrant energy of Times Square, and the towering skyscrapers often come to mind. However, the city is equally popular for its famous Central Park. This is the first landscaped park established in the United States and has made appearances in various TV shows and films, such as Friends and Sex and the City. And suppose you’ve always dreamed of visiting this park. In that case, there’s some news: Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra Eknath Shinde has revealed plans to transform the entire 120 acres of the Mahalaxmi Racecourse into a vast, green space inspired by New York’s Central Park.
During the Idea Exchange Conclave hosted by The Indian Express in Mumbai on September 4th, Deputy Chief Minister Shinde elaborated on recent developments. He said that the goal is to create a space where Mumbaikars can find a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Mahalaxmi Racecourse Will Become A Recreational Space For The Public
In July 2024, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) finalized an agreement to hand over part of the racecourse land to the municipal authorities. The lease was signed in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Shinde, marking a significant milestone in the project. Out of the total 211 acres, 120 acres now belong to the BMC, while the RWITC retains a lease on the remaining 91 acres until May 31, 2053.
On this, Deputy CM Shinde emphasized that there will be no construction on the land, as the aim is to develop it into a world-class park for public enjoyment. Civic officials have shared plans for the 120-acre area, which will feature pathways, walkways, and seating for visitors. They clarified that “theme park” does not mean creating an amusement park with extra structures, and the land will not be transferred to real estate developers.
The vision is to create a 200-acre green space similar to London’s Hyde Park or New York’s Central Park. The BMC will maintain ownership of the land, ensuring that no private entities have any stake in it. Stay tuned for more updates on this!
