This temple has been on Gokarna’s map since the 4th century AD. The first thing to catch your eye will be the 1.8 m tall Shiva Linga, also known as Atmalinga. This marvelous structure is made out of white granite and reflects Dravidian architecture.

Inside the temple, there’s a 1,500-year-old image of Lord Shiva carved on the temple walls. The temple is also called Dakshin Kashi because it’s as sacred as Vishwanath Shiva Temple in Varanasi.

Before visiting, remember that the temple has a strict dress code. Women have to wear sarees or kurtis with a scarf and men have to be in a dhoti. In case you haven’t packed any, you can get one from the front of the temple.

It’s right beside the Mahabaleshwar Temple and the story goes that because of Lord Ganesha, the Atmalinga got placed in Gokarna. The Ganapathi idol even has a mark on its head that was given by Ravana during the fight to get the Shiva Linga. Tap the walls of both temples with folded fists – also called doing kuttu to please Lord Ganesha.

The 1.3 m high idol of Bala Ganesha inside the temple is made with black stone. As tradition holds, you should ideally pay a visit to this temple first before going to the main Mahabaleshwar Temple.

Also known as Gogarbha Caves, you must explore this lesser-known Shiva temple in Gokarna. Located 600 m above sea level, Hindu mythology claims that Lord Shiva arose from a cow’s ear, which is why the cave is also called ‘Cow’s Womb’.

Once you step inside the cave, the silence is so loud that you can hear your heartbeat! Inside the cave, you’ll find different chambers – one is the main entrance chamber, and the other is the blue chapel chamber.

The trek to this cave and the journey within may be challenging, but it’s worth it. Don’t forget to carry a torchlight because you don’t want to get lost in the darkness inside the caves.

4. Bhadrakali Temple

To defend the demon Vetrasur, Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Brahma created Durga – a powerful female warrior. After defeating the demon, Lord Vishnu renamed her Bhadrakali and she now protects the town of Gokarna. Another legend states that after being abandoned by Ravana, Lord Vishnu requested Goddess Bhadrakali to stay in Gokarna.

Devotees visit this temple with the belief that their prayers will be answered by the goddess. You’ll see that the idol has a fierce expression on its face and wide, angry eyes. In front of the temple, there are statues of two lions and a warrior to show the strength of Maa Kaali.
