Madh-Versova Bridge Gets Green Light After 58 Years, Construction To Begin By October

Madh-Versova Bridge

Mumbai has a well-connected transport system, but Madh Island is one of the few places that’s somewhat isolated. Currently, the only way to access Madh Island is by ferry. However, a bridge linking Madh Island to Versova is on the way. After almost six decades of delays, the Madh-Versova Bridge project is finally moving forward. Proposed back in 1967, this bridge will stretch 2.06 kilometers and aims to cut down the lengthy 90-minute, 22-kilometer road trip to under five minutes.

The new Madh-Versova bridge will cross Versova Creek, connecting the Madh and Versova jetties. Right now, the fastest way to navigate the creek is by boat, which takes less than five minutes and costs around ₹10-15, with additional fees for bikes. Unfortunately, this option isn’t available for cars or during the monsoon season when boat service is halted. The alternative involves a long drive of 22 kilometers that takes about 90 minutes via JP Road, Link Road, and Mith Chowky.

Madh-Versova Bridge Will Provide A Quicker Option To The Residents To Get From One Spot To Another

The Madh-Versova Bridge will provide a much quicker option, with an estimated cost of INR 2,395-3,984 crore. Additionally, it will connect to the Versova end of the Versova-Bhayandar Coastal Road, offering residents of Madh, Malad, and nearby areas easier access to both the Coastal Road and Versova.

Although plans for the bridge had been stagnant for nearly 60 years, they were revived in 2015, with tendering completed in 2019. The construction of this bridge is essential as it will drastically reduce travel time for those in the northern suburbs heading to Versova and regions further south, serving as an alternative to the busy Link Road, even before the Coastal Road project is fully implemented.
