Ladakh, often referred to as the land of high passes, continues to impress with its remarkable sights. While it is well-known for Khardung La Pass and Pangong Lake, it also features Hanle. Hanle is India’s first dark sky reserve. Recognized as one of the best locations in India for stargazing, Hanle is all set to host its inaugural Astro Festival on June 27 and 28, 2025. This important festival aims to establish Ladakh as a top destination for stargazing and astronomy.
Organized by the Union Territory’s Department of Tourism in partnership with the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, the two-day festival promises to be a celestial highlight.

The government of Ladakh has announced the first-ever Astro Festival on social media. This year’s festival focuses on exploring the night sky and identifying celestial objects. Ladakh is a perfect location for viewing meteor showers such as the Perseids and Geminids, observing the Milky Way, and seeing the rings of Saturn, the moons of Jupiter, and various constellations. The tourism board’s goal is to highlight Ladakh’s astronomical attractions. It also aims tncourage more visitors to experience its unique features beyond the usual tourist spots.

– “Public Talks” at the District Panchayat Resource Centre in Agling, Leh.
– Guided stargazing and night sky observation sessions at the University of Ladakh, Taru Campus.
What To Know About Hanle
Hanle is a remote village that lies approximately 260 km from Leh, perched at an altitude of about 4,500 meters. This village is well-known among travelers for its historic monastery. The 17th-century Drukpa Lineage monastery of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism can be found on the right side at the entrance of the village.
How To Reach Hanle
The nearest airport to Hanle is Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, located about 5 km from the main town of Leh. You can find cheaper tickets to Leh from Delhi and Mumbai. The stunning views you’ll encounter during your journey will definitely make the expense worthwhile. Once you arrive in Leh, take some time to acclimatize. And then you can embark on a road trip to Hanle.
