Kolkata Police Issues Traffic Advisory For Ram Navami: Check Road Closures On March 26–27

Kolkata

With Ram Navami celebrations set to take place across Kolkata, Kolkata police have announced a detailed traffic advisory for March 26 and 27, warning of diversions, restrictions, and heightened security across key routes. The measures come as authorities prepare for a large number of processions during what officials describe as a “high-sensitivity period.”

Kolkata Police Issues Traffic Advisory For Ram Navami

In an official notification issued by Commissioner of Kolkata Police – Ajay Nand, movement of all goods vehicles within the city will be restricted during peak hours. As per the order, such vehicles will not be allowed between 12 noon and midnight on March 26, and between 6 am and 8 pm on March 27. However, essential services, including vehicles carrying LPG, milk, medicines, and other necessities, have been exempted.

The advisory makes it clear that traffic movement will be actively regulated, diverted, or restricted along procession routes depending on real-time conditions. Police have also indicated that diversions may extend beyond main routes to feeder and arterial roads if required, urging commuters to plan ahead and allow extra travel time.

Large-Scale Processions, Tightened Monitoring

The restrictions come amid an expected surge in Ram Navami rallies. Officials estimate that over 90 processions will take place across Kolkata alone, while the broader region, including Howrah and nearby areas, could see more than 130 rallies over the two days.

Police sources say most processions will include 200 to 500 participants, although at least six major rallies are expected to draw crowds exceeding 1,500 people. These larger gatherings, particularly those scheduled in the evening hours, are being treated as high-priority from a security standpoint.

To manage the situation, the city will see the deployment of over 5,000 police personnel and 50 senior officers, with teams stationed at strategic points. Surveillance will be extensive, with the use of drones, body cameras, rooftop monitoring, and live-feed systems from control rooms at Lalbazar.

Court Guidelines & Rally Conditions

In parallel, the Calcutta High Court has permitted certain processions, including a major rally by the Vishva Hindu Parishad in Howrah, but with strict conditions. Participation has been capped at 500 people, and organisers must submit ID details of participants in advance.

Authorities have also banned the carrying of weapons, lathis, or high-decibel DJ systems, allowing only symbolic items. Any deviation from approved routes or violation of guidelines could invite legal action, police officials said.

What Commuters Should Expect

For residents and visitors, the next two days are likely to bring significant traffic disruptions. Key roads may be temporarily closed, and traffic could be rerouted at short notice. Police have already begun clearing routes of parked vehicles and obstructions to ensure smoother movement of processions.

Additional measures include:

  • Deployment of Quick Response Teams and bike patrols in smaller lanes
  • Increased checkpoints and vehicle checks across the city
  • Round-the-clock monitoring by Flying Squad and Surveillance Teams

Authorities have also stressed that no unauthorised rallies or motorcycle processions will be allowed, and strict action will be taken against violations.

Summing Up

With both religious processions and election-related sensitivities in play, Kolkata is set to operate under heightened alert through the week. Commuters are advised to avoid non-essential travel during peak hours, follow police updates, and use alternate routes wherever possible.

While Ram Navami remains a major cultural and religious event, this year’s focus is firmly on crowd control, safety, and maintaining order across the city.
