Kolkata is home to India’s first metro system, launched way back in 1984. With a history of having some of the best urban connectivity in India, the city is only expanding its reliable and efficient metro network, with the Kolkata Metro Purple Line being one of them.
While the line hasn’t become entirely operational, a phase of it from Joka to Majerhat is operational as of 2025, and plans to expand it are in full swing.

A Brief Overview Of The Kolkata Metro Purple Line
The Purple Line is partially operational on a 7.75 km stretch between Joka and Majerhat, with the original plan set to expand it to Esplanade.
Authorities have proposed expanding the finished Joka-Esplanade route to Eden Gardens as well as Diamond Park.
Upon completion, the Joka-Esplanade Kolkata Metro Purple Line will be a 14 to 15-km corridor that will connect Joka in South Kolkata to Esplanade in the city center.
The line will allow for seamless connectivity with other metro lines on Kolkata’s metro map. At Esplanade, commuters will be able to easily switch from the Purple Line to both the Blue Line and the Green Line. Commuters will also be able to switch from the Purple Line to the Blue Line at Park Street as well.

Kolkata Metro Purple Line Update In July 2025: Tunneling Work Begins
Two giant Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) named ‘Durga’ and ‘Divya’ began tunneling work on Kolkata Metro’s Purple Line. This work will begin from Kidderpore to Victoria.
Durga will tunnel up to Victoria in the first phase and will cover a distance of 1.7 km, expected to reach completion by May 2026. The entire underground stretch to Park Street is targeted to reach completion by the end of 2026.
Both Durga and Divya will be deployed to construct the twin tunnels between Kidderpore and Park Street, with the stretch beyond Park Street to Esplanade being built using a cut-and-cover method.
Kolkata Metro Purple Line Update On August 11: Increased Frequency And Timings
From August 11, 2025, the Kolkata Metro Purple Line saw a major boost in its metro train frequency. The Purple Line, which is operational between Joka and Majerhat corridor, saw a jump in frequency.
Before August 11,the daily frequency was set at 72, with 36 ferries on the Up route and 36 ferries running on the Down route. Starting August 11, the Joka-Majerhat corridor will see 8 extra rides in total, with the frequency jumping from 72 to 80. Now, commuters will see 40 ferries each, both on the Up and Down route.
The Kolkata Metro Purple Line will also extend its service hours, beginning service from 6:50 AM to 9:14 PM. Previously, service began at 7:57 AM and ended at 8:32 PM. However, operational days on this line will remain unchanged, i.e., from Monday to Friday.
With increased operational timings and increased frequency, the Purple Line of Kolkata Metro will make commuting more convenient and accessible to a whole lot of commuters.
