Kerala Gets Fifth ‘Mechanical Elephant’ To Preserve Wildlife And Culture

Kerala is renowned for its vibrant culture, picturesque tea estates, and lush landscapes, but it’s also gaining recognition for its unique relationship with elephants. These majestic creatures have long been integral to many traditions and rituals in the state. However, to conform these cultural practices with animal welfare, Kerala has introduced a remarkable innovation – a life-sized mechanical elephant. This initiative was made possible through a collaboration between People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and Grammy-nominated sitarist Anoushka Shankar. Together, they donated the mechanical elephant to the Kombara Sreekrishna Swami Temple in Thrissur.

Stepping into the spotlight, the elephant, named Kombara Kannan, stands at an impressive 3 meters tall and weighs 800 kilograms. The unveiling ceremony was conducted by Satish Vimalan, Secretary of the Unnayi Variyar Memorial Kalanilayam. Kombara Kannan is now the fifth mechanical elephant given to a temple in Kerala by PETA India. It also marks the second such installation in the Thrissur district.

The First Mechanical Elephant In Kerala Debuted In 2023

It is made from rubber, fibreglass, metal, foam, and steel. And this mechanical elephant mimics the appearance and movements of a real elephant closely. It can move its head, ears, and eyes, swish its tail and raise its trunk. It even sprays water, making it a lively addition to temple events. Mounted on a wheelbase, it is designed to join in on temple processions and rituals, allowing for the preservation of tradition without compromising the welfare of live elephants.

The first of these mechanical elephants debuted in February 2023 at the Irinjadappilly Sri Krishna Temple, also in Thrissur, gifted by PETA India with support from actress Parvathy Thiruvothu. Named Irinjadapilly Raman, this impressive elephant stands ten and a half feet tall. It weighs 800 kg and is capable of carrying four people. It showcases the potential for innovative solutions that benefit wildlife while honoring tradition.
