Kedarnath Yatra To Get Faster: 9-Hour Trek To Become 36-Minute Ropeway Ride

Kedarnath Yatra

Kedarnath Yatra is one of the most sacred and well-known pilgrimage sites in India, holding deep spiritual meaning. Located at an altitude of 3,584 meters in Uttarakhand, it lies alongside the Mandakini River. Kedarnath Yatra is also home to one of the 12 Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva. There are various ways to reach Kedarnath, including an 8 to 9-hour trek, helicopter rides, or pony services. However, during the monsoon and extreme weather, trekking can be challenging. And now, if you are planning to go to Kedarnath soon, we have some exciting news for you. The Adani Group, led by Gautam Adani, has secured a contract to construct a nearly 13-kilometer ropeway that will link Sonprayag to Kedarnath.

Sonprayag is the last road-accessible point for pilgrims heading to the temple. The Indian government approved this ropeway project in March, investing around INR 4,081 crore to create a quicker and more comfortable travel option for visitors.

What To Know About The Kedarnath Yatra Ropeway

Spanning 12.9 kilometers, this ropeway will replace the exhausting 16-kilometer uphill trek. Once completed, the journey will take only 36 minutes instead of the traditional 9 hours.

The capacity of the ropeway is impressive, as it can transport 1,800 passengers per hour in each direction, catering to thousands of pilgrims annually. Currently, Kedarnath welcomes around 20 lakh visitors each year, underscoring the significance of this development.

The project will be managed by Adani Enterprises Ltd and is a part of the National Ropeways Development Programme, developed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). It is expected to be completed in six years, with Adani operating it for 29 years afterwards. By connecting this sacred site more effectively, the ropeway will enhance tourism, create jobs, and improve the overall experience for pilgrims.

Gautam Adani emphasized that this project signifies a blend of spirituality and modern infrastructure, making the pilgrimage safer and more accessible.

Kedarnath Yatra Helicopter Price Increases

If you’re planning to take the Kedarnath Yatra by helicopter, be ready for a significant fare increase of nearly 49%. Starting September 15, 2025, new rates will take effect, pending approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. A round trip from Guptkashi to Kedarnath will now cost INR 12,444, up from approximately INR 8,500. Similarly, fares from Phata and Sirsi to Kedarnath will rise to INR 8,900 and INR 8,500, respectively. This hike means an added expense of around INR 4,000 to INR 5,000, alongside enhanced safety measures for passengers.
