Government Approves INR 6,811 Crore Kedarnath And Hemkund Sahib Ropeway Project

The central government has approved two new ropeway projects in Uttarakhand aimed at catering to pilgrims and devotees. The projects include a 12.9-kilometer ropeway from Sonprayag to Kedarnath and another 12.4-kilometer ropeway from Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib Ji. The total estimated cost for these projects is INR 6,811 crore. These ropeways will provide better connectivity to Kedarnath and Hemkund Sahib Ji.

This ambitious project is projected to take about 4 to 6 years to become fully operational, as announced by Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. It is set to be developed through a public-private partnership and will utilize cutting-edge Tri-cable Detachable Gondola (3S) technology. This system can transport up to 1,800 passengers per hour in each direction. And will have the capacity to accommodate 18,000 passengers daily.

Currently, reaching Hemkund Sahib Ji requires a 21-kilometer uphill trek from Govindghat, which is undertaken by foot or via ponies and palanquins. The proposed ropeway aims to enhance convenience for pilgrims heading to Hemkund Sahib Ji and visiting the Valley of Flowers.

Similarly, the journey to Kedarnath temple involves a 16-kilometer uphill trek from Gaurikund. The trek can also be made on foot or by using ponies, palanquins, and helicopters. The new ropeway is intended to facilitate easier access for pilgrims to the temple and ensure all-weather connectivity between Sonprayag and Kedarnath.
